Changing your Minecraft Server Version

Obsidian Servers allows you to select from a variety of Minecraft server types and versions. This guide will walk you through the process of changing your server version, whether you're setting up a new server or switching to a different version.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Log in to the Obsidian Servers panel

  2. Select your Minecraft server from the dashboard

  3. Look for the sidebar menu and locate the "Management" section

  4. Click on "Versions"

  5. Choose your desired server type:

    • Vanilla Minecraft (Official)
    • Paper (Optimized, plugin support)
    • Spigot (Plugin support)
    • Fabric (Mod support)
    • And many other options
  6. After selecting the server type, choose the specific Minecraft version you want to run

    • Latest releases are at the top
    • Older versions are available for compatibility with specific mods/plugins
  7. You'll be presented with additional options:

    • Wipe Server Files: Check this box if you want to start with a clean server WARNING: This will permanently delete all existing server data. Create backups of important files before proceeding.
    • Agree to Minecraft EULA: Check this box to automatically agree to Minecraft's End User License Agreement, allowing your server to start immediately
  8. Click "Install" or "Change Version" to apply your selections

After Changing Versions

Once you've changed your server version:

  1. The system will begin installing the selected version
  2. Wait for the installation to complete
  3. Start your server using the control panel
  4. If you've wiped server files, you'll need to reconfigure your server settings

Compatibility Considerations

  • Plugins/mods designed for specific versions may not work with other versions
  • World files from newer versions may not be compatible with older versions
  • Some server types (like Paper) offer better performance for larger player counts

If you encounter any issues during the version change process, please contact our Technical Support for assistance.
